Siberian Husky

Supreme pack animals with seemingly limitless stamina, Siberian Huskies have been used to herd reindeer and pull sleds in Siberia for more than three thousand years.  They were developed and bred by the seminomadic Chukchi people.  World famous as exceptional working dogs, Huskies are energetic animals that need a great deal of exercise.  They enjoy adventure in the form of digging and jumping fences--so a secure enclosed yard is a necessity.  These dogs rarely bark, but instead vocalize with a wolf like howl.

Temperament

Siberian Huskies are dignified dogs with equable temperaments.  Husky puppies were raised by the women of the Chukchi people, and it has traditionally been said that this is the reason for the Husky's relaxed temperament and ease in a family environment.  Friendly and gentle, Siberian Huskies display none of the overprotective qualities of watchdogs, but in the presence of other dogs, they will tend to exercise the domineering behavior typical of pack animals.

Appearance

The soft, dense undercoat sheds throughout the year and is covered by a harsher, straight, medium-length outer coat of almost any color.  Huskies are strongly built, elegant dogs of medium height, with large heads and a tapering muzzle.  The almond-shaped eyes give them a friendly and alert expression, and the pricked, triangular ears are positioned high on the head.  They have substantial chests, strong legs, and a brush tail that needs careful grooming during the molting season.
