Schipperke

Small and energetic, this Belgian dog once worked on the canal boats of Flanders chasing vermin, and its name means "little captain."  The Schipperke is physically similar to Spitz dogs, with a fox like face and erect ears, though it is probably descended from the Belgian black sheepdog.

Breed Category

Non-Sporting Dog

Temperament

The Schipperke is a lively, intelligent breed that makes an affectionate family pet, although it can be suspicious with strangers and very stubborn.

Appearance

The Schipperke's shiny coat is thick and harsh, and stands up around the neck to create a ruff, with "culottes" on the back and thighs.  Longer than they are tall, Schipperkes have deep chests and powerful legs, with small, round feet.  The head is reasonably wide with a pronounced stop and long, tapered muzzle; the small ears are erect.  Dark brown eyes give the dog an alert expression.  The outer coat is black, though the undercoat may be slightly lighter.
