Saint Bernard

As mountain rescue dogs, the powers of Saint Bernards are almost legendary, and these massive dogs--equipped with the famous brandy barrel--are credited with saving hundreds of lives. The breed was probably developed by breeding the Asian "Molasser" dogs that the Roman armies brought to Helvetia during the first two centuries A.D. with the native dogs that existed in the region during that time. They are large, powerful dogs with plenty of stamina and they need a good, high-quality diet--especially while they are still growing.
Breed Category
Working Dog
Temperament
Saint Bernards are gentle and trustworthy dogs that are easily trained and make fine family pets. They need ample space and exercise, and though they are good with children, their very bulk means that constant supervision is necessary in order to avoid accidents.
Appearance
Saint Bernards have a reassuring bulk and an intelligent expression that is emphasized by the white blaze on the face. The large, wide head is characterized by wrinkles on the forehead and a short muzzle; the flews of the lower jaw hang slightly. Saint Bernards are copious salivators. The wide neck gives way to a broad chest and back, with a strong tail that curves slightly at the tip. Saint Bernards can have either rough or smooth coats, and coloring is orange, red-brindle, or brown-brindle.
