Rottweiler

Rottweilers have a reputation as formidable and sometimes threatening dogs, although their ferocity has been somewhat reduced by selective breeding. It is likely that these dogs are descended from one of the drover dogs of ancient Rome, and it is thought that the Romans brought their Tibetan Mastiff ancestors to Germany more than two thousand years ago. Rottweilers need plenty of vigorous exercise, and they are not suitable pets for inexperienced dog owners because of their size and power.
Breed Category
Working Dog
Temperament
Rottweilers are superb watchdogs and they respond well to obedience training, though owners must be prepared to devote considerable time to this. They are generally good-natured animals, but--if challenged by other dogs or stranger--they may show their temper and demonstrate their naturally strong urge to protect their family.
Appearance
Rottweilers are handsome dogs, mainly black, but with tan markings on the legs and face. The coat is dense and short, with an undercoat on the neck and thighs. The body is heavily set and powerfully muscular. The strong, arched neck supports a large, broad head with a short, square muzzle and robust jaws. Almond-shaped eyes are dark brown, and the ears are positioned high and wide on the head. Rottweilers have deep, broad chests, heavily boned legs, straight, slightly sloping backs, and tails that are often docked.
