Rhodesian Ridgeback

Powerful and muscular, Rhodesian Ridgebacks are also known as African Lion dogs, as they were bred to trail big game, particularly lions. They are formidable animals and, today, they are popular as watchdogs because they are usually loyal to their owners and tend to be suspicious of strangers.

Temperament
Sometimes stubborn and prone to aggression, and not always reliable with children, Ridgebacks can be rewarding, loyal pets but require a good deal of discipline and training.
Appearance
Handsome dogs, Rhodesian Ridgebacks are characterized by a ridge along the back, on which the hair grows forward. Powerful in appearance, the chest is broad and deep, and the neck is muscular. The head is broad between the ears and reasonably long. Eyes are set well apart and ears hang down from high on the head. The short, sleek coat is an attractive golden-red color and, in cold climates, a thick undercoat grows for added insulation.
