Norwegian Elkhound

 

Evidence from Norway suggests that this breed is almost 5,000 years old.  The most popular dogs of the Spitz family, they were bred, as their name suggests, to hunt elk.

They are courageous, intelligent dogs with plenty of stamina and, as pets, they can usually be trusted with children.

Appearance

Elkhounds have wedge-shaped muzzles and small, pricked ears.  The coat is thick and weather-resistant:  The coarse, straight outercoat covers a soft undercoat.  The color is varying shades of gray, with occasional black tips.  They have a ruff around the muscular neck and a wide ribcage.  The body is compact and well muscled, and a high-set tail curls over the back.

Weight:    43-50 lbs  

Exercise Requirements:    Moderate

Grooming Requirements:    Moderate

Life Expectancy:    12-13 years

Things to Consider

  1. Rigorous obedience training is recommended.
