Lowchen

The Lowchen is also known as the "Little Lion Dog" because of the distinctive way its wavy coat is sometimes trimmed around the legs and loins.  Lowchens are truly European dogs, being descended from French Bichons, and were used during the Middle Ages as affectionate companion dogs.

Breed Category

Non-Sporting Dog

Temperament

Lowchens are gregarious, intelligent dogs who love playing with children and are confident in their dealings with other dogs.

Appearance

The Lowchen's coat only needs to be trimmed for show purposes and is naturally soft, long and wavy in any color.  They are small compact dogs, slightly longer than they are high, with round heads and short muzzles.  The eyes are deep set and inquisitive, while the nose color depends on the shad of the coat.  The ears hang down the side of the head and are well-fringed.  The high-set tail is clipped to leave a tuft at the end and is often carried over the back when the dog is moving.
