Finnish Spitz

With their rich, golden coats, pointed muzzles, and erect ears, these handsome animals bear more than a passing resemblance to foxes.  They are vigorous dogs, used by Finns for generations as hunters and retrievers.  In fact, this breed is the national dog of Finland, where it is still used as a worker:  These dogs employ their exceptional hearing to listen out for wing beats, which tell them that a bird has landed, and then bark loudly to alert the hunter.

Breed Category

Non-Sporting Dog

Temperament

Friendly, intelligent, and alert, they make excellent watchdogs and outgoing family pets.  They are easily trained and usually very obedient, although excessive barking is not easily corrected.

Appearance

The Finnish Spitz has a glorious red double coat:  The undercoat is a slightly lighter color than the abundant topcoat and makes the whole coat glow.  The body is compact and square, with a bushy tail that is carried curled over the back.  The muzzle is pointed, the lively eyes almond-shaped and dark, and the ears are erect.
