Dachshund

Dachshunds were originally developed in Germany to flush out badgers from their setts. They are bred in three varieties: smooth, wirehaired, and longhaired; and in two sizes: standard and miniature. Smooth Dachshunds are though to have origins in ancient Egypt, as sculptures from this period show short-legged dogs seated beside the pharaohs. Longhaired Dachshunds are descended from a cross between Dachshunds and short-legged spaniels, such as the Sussex. Wirehaired Dachshunds were bred by crossing Smooth Dachshunds with rough-haired Pinschers and then with Dandie Dinmont Terriers.

Temperament
Intelligent, brave, and independent-minded dogs, Dachshunds need firm training from an early age, as they are not naturally eager to behave obediently and can sometimes be aggressive toward people or other dogs. Energetic and playful, they have a tendency to put on weight if allowed to indulge their love of food or if insufficiently exercised. They can be good with children if socialized with them while they are puppies.
Appearance
Dachshunds have well-defined heads with long muzzles and expressive, intelligent eyes, framed by ears that rest against the cheek. The coats vary greatly in length and color. Shorthaired Dachshunds have smooth, glossy coats. Those of the longhaired type are soft and slightly wavy, and the ears, set just above the eyes, are covered in fine, silky hair. Wirehaired Dachshunds are characterized by rough coats and goatee beards.
